Brief description and aims of work

The Fraunhofer-Institut Biomedizinische Technik (IBMT) is one of the five institutes of the Alliance Life Science of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Its R+D fields include among others e-health, ICT research infrastructures and cryotechnology for storage of living samples at low temperatures. IBMT has developed and operates important ICT based research and e-health services. Examples are the Global HIV Vaccine Research Repository on behalf of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the foundation’s Collaboration for Aids Vaccine Development and the Central Research Infrastructure for molecular Pathology CRIP which provides web access to more than 1 million human tissue samples using an ICT infrastructure of IBMT to link local clinical biorepositories into a central 'meta biobank'.The department Telematics & Intelligent Health Systems has a well known expertise in developing innovative ICT solutions for e-health, personal health systems and telemedicine as well as on semantic biomedical data integration and innovative ICT infrastructures for cryo biobanking or clinical cancer research. Among others, it recently developed an Ontology based clinical trial management system as part of a Grid based ICT infrastructure for data sharing and collaborative clinical research on cancer. In addition, the department developed IBMT’s cyro biobank information system and corresponding biobank portals for IBMT’s biomaterial collections and specimen provision services. The group Biobank Networks at the Potsdam site of IBMT specializes in aggregation and integration of clinical data into meta biobanks, including classification and standardization of medical reports, data harmonization and anonymisation, as well as knowledge extraction from medical records. The Privacy Regime and comprehensive software toolkit originally developed for CRIP is continually enhanced for further meta biobank projects like 'Projektportal im Deutschen Biobanken-Register' and the inter-meta biobank collaboration between CRIP and the biobank suisse.

The main responsibility of Fraunhofer IBMT in the p-medicine project is to lead WP 10 'Access to biobanks', in which a meta search engine for the integrated access to biobanks will be developed. Another important task in the project is to develop services that allow reusing data from Hospital Information Systems in Trial Management Systems to avoid redundant data entry during conducting clinical trials. Furthermore, Fraunhofer IBMT will be responsible for the design and implementation of the p-medicine portal.
