Fraunhofer IZI

Brief description and aims of work

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI investigates and develops solutions to specific problems at the interfaces of medicine, life sciences and engineering. One of the institute's main tasks is to conduct contract research for companies, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and research institutes operating in the field of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical engineering. Its areas of competence lie in cell biology, immunology, drug biochemistry, bioanalytics and bioproduction as well as process development and automation.

Affiliated with Fraunhofer IZI’s Potsdam branch “Bioanalytics and bioprocesses” (IZI-BB), the group Metabiobanken CRIP specializes in integration of clinical and biobank data into metabiobanks, including classification and standardization of medical reports, data harmonization and anonymisation, as well as knowledge extraction from medical records. The Privacy Regime and comprehensive software toolkit originally developed for CRIP is continually enhanced for further metabiobank projects like “Projektportal im Deutschen Biobanken-Register” or “DPKK-Biobank”.

In the p-medicine project, Fraunhofer IZI-BB is mainly responsible for  WP 10 'Access to biobanks', in which a meta search engine for the integrated access to biobanks is developed.
